Dear Members and Senators,
I write to request that Australia Day be no longer held on January 26 and that you act to bring about this change through government. I believe that celebrations of Australia held on that day are deeply disrespectful to many First Nations peoples. For many First Nations peoples, January 26 represents invasion, mourning and survival. Whilst it may be appropriate to hold celebrations of Australia, this must be done respectfully and avoid dates which have significance in the colonisation of this land and the consequent harms done to the First Nations peoples who have lived here for more than 60,000 years.
January 26 is not a day when all Australians, including First Nations peoples, can celebrate Australia. Given First Nations peoples have never ceded sovereignty or established treaties with the colonial government/s in Australia, I believe it is only a matter of respect that we do our utmost to remove institutions e.g. Australia Day on January 26, which perpetuate offence and trauma.
Please let me know what action/s you will take to change the date for the celebration of Australia Day, thank you.
Yours sincerely
